FAQ

Joya Child and Family Development aims to help families thrive so kids can thrive. But sometimes it’s hard to know just where to start, or if your child needs early intervention services. Here are some answers to some frequently asked questions:

Families and children

Who can refer a child for services?

Referrals for children 0-3 years are accepted from physicians, public health nurses, hospitals, parents and other early intervention service providers.

What geographic area does Joya serve?

We serve children who reside in Spokane County School Districts. (We do not serve children who are located in school districts that already provide early intervention services. These school districts are: East Valley, Riverside and Nine Mile.)

Is there a waiting list for services?

Generally, no. We can schedule evaluations right away. There may be waitlists for certain service options. If we cannot provide a service for your child, we will help you find a service provider who can.

What is the evaluation process?

The evaluation process for medically fragile children takes several steps over a couple of weeks. These steps include the following:

Intake Appointment:
The intake appointment occurs in your home and will be conducted by a pediatric nurse and medical social worker who will screen your child’s development, collect medical and family information, connect you with resources you may be eligible for and set the plan for the rest of the evaluation process.

Team Evaluation:
The team evaluation is a two-hour assessment with a special education teacher, physical therapist, occupational therapist and speech/language pathologist to assess your child’s skill levels in cognitive, speech/language, fine motor, gross motor, adaptive and social-emotional areas. This can be scheduled in the home or at the school.

Pediatric Evaluation:
The pediatric evaluation is a 45-minute evaluation with our Medical Director. He will examine your child, review your child’s medical records and make medical recommendations to you and your child’s primary physician.

Team Post Conference:
The team post conference is a discussion with evaluation team members regarding the results of your child’s team evaluation. You will receive a written summary of the team evaluation.

Individualized Family Service Plan (IFSP):
The Individualized Family Service Plan (IFSP) is a written plan, which describes your child’s abilities, your family’s priorities for treatment and the details of the services being provided to help your child grow and develop.

The evaluation process for all other children is immediate.

Intake Paperwork:
Intake paperwork is mailed when you call to request an evaluation.

Phone Intake:
Phone intake is completed once the intake paperwork is returned.

Team Evaluation:
The team evaluation is scheduled at the time of the phone intake. This is a one-hour assessment with a special education teacher, physical therapist, occupational therapist and speech/language pathologist.

Pediatric Evaluation:
If your child qualifies for early intervention services and Joya Child and Family Development is your best option for therapy, a pediatric evaluation will be scheduled.

The pediatric evaluation is a 45 min. evaluation with our Medical Director. He will examine your child, review your child’s medical records and make medical recommendations to you and your child’s primary physician.

Individualized Family Service Plan (IFSP):
The Individualized Family Service Plan (IFSP) is a written plan, which describes your child’s abilities, your family’s priorities for treatment and the details of the services being provided to help your child grow and develop.

Will my insurance cover the costs for evaluation and treatment?

Most insurers have some benefit for early intervention services. Check your individual policy. Medicaid and SSI cover services. The school has private revenues to help cover costs that insurance will not cover. No family will be turned away due to inability to pay.

Are home-based services available?

Parents can request that services be provided in-home or in the childcare setting. As with all services, there are limitations upon the amount and frequency of services provided.

Are transportation services available?

No. Joya Child & Family Development does not provide transportation services.

Special Mobility Services, assists with transportation to individual services for children enrolled in Medicaid and Supplemental Security Income (SSI).

What happened to the Spokane Guilds’ School?

With plans underway to have a larger, more centrally located facility that can serve even more children and families on land purchased in Spokane’s University District, in 2018, we embarked on a rebranding for the school. The name was changed to better reflect the joy, positivity, care and experience we deliver to children and families, every day. While the name has changed, the same excellent staff and therapists are carrying on the tradition of the founding ladies of the Guilds in providing opportunity for all children to live life to their fullest potential.
